Would now be a good time to buy stocks and shares?

I know people are predicting a recession and people are worried. Surly this will all blow over. I was wondering if someone were to have a few spare thousands of pounds, would now be a wise time to invest if they can wait a few years ,if that's what it takes to make a profit? or is it a possibility they could lose the lot?

Many thanks in advance for your advice and answers.

I am not a investor but from what i understand about it from accounting classes in college...it would be a good time as long as you are sure that you will not need the money any time soon...the stocks may continue to drop and some business may close...but if you can wait it out you would have a nice reward for it.
