CHOOSING THE RIGHT INK CARTRIDGE
There are many different types of printer ink cartridge on the market today, each with its own advantages (and disadvantages) in terms of cost, print quality, reliability, page yield, cost, performance and impact on the environment.. What’s important to realise however, is there is no ‘right’ cartridge to use, only the ‘right’ one for your individual needs.
There are essentially three types of replacement printer toners cartridges, the first is OEM (original equipment manufacturer), the second is compatible cartridges and the third is remanufactured cartridges. All of these can be bought from office supply stores or from online cartridge suppliers (often at a cheaper price), so it’s worth knowing what the pros and cons are of each type and which one is best suited to your needs, so you can make an informed decision when ordering.
Original equipment manufacturer cartridges (OEM)
As the name implies, these are original, genuine products. They are manufactured by the printer companies or licenced partners (eg Canon, HP, Samsung, Brother, Epson etc) and they will be branded with the company name. They are high quality and cost more than other types.
Some people still believe that if they don’t use OEM ink cartridges, they will compromise the warranties on their printers, but this has been proved in law that this isn’t the case.
Compatible cartridges
These meet the specifications of OEM cartridges, but don't carry the brand name of the printer or printing company. The majority of these are made from all new components, but the composition of the inkjet or toner cartridge will be stated on the packaging.
They can retail at up to half or a third of the cost of OEM cartridges, but users need to check that they are fully compatible with their printer model otherwise problems could arise. Professional printer cartridge retailers will be up to date on the latest industry news on generics and will be able to advise on the best choices. Consumers should exercise caution when selecting generics to ensure compatibility.
{Remanufactured (refurbished) cartridges}
A refurbished cartridge is an original(OEM) cartridge that is sent back to authorised destination (after having been used) where it is cleaned, refurbished if necessary, refilled with the same ink and tested thoroughly before being offered for re-sale. The quality is guaranteed if the remanufacturer is certified by the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO).
Remanufactured cartridges are an environmentally friendly choice as they prevent used cartridges from being put into landfill – but they do cost more than generics but cost less than OEMs.
Re-filled cartridges
There are also places that refill your own empty cartridges. Another option is to buy a home filling kit. This process is the cheapest way – but it is also the riskiest. It can be very messy, time-consuming and the results are not always consistent or satisfactory
