Lightweight Backpacks Essential for Long Treks
If you like to hike or trek over 20 miles in a day you will know how the weight of the gear you carry with you is a very significant factor. Most experienced backpackers will know that you can reduce your weight by concentrating on the three most important items: your backpack, your sleeping bag and your shelter.
So you will want to leave your huge 10 pound tent and snug 5 pound sleeping bag at home and get yourself the lightest backpack you can find.
You may find it hard to believe but there are some really good lightweight backpacks that weigh less than four ounces. This may seem unbelievable but modern materials make this entirely feasible. Most bags like this will have a capacity of around 1500 to 1800 cubic inches which will enable you to carry about 15 pounds of equipment. This capacity should be enough for your lightweight sleeping bag, a tarpaulin for shelter and a few vital necessities including a first aid kit and some energy bars. And you mustn't overlook the need to carry some water with you.
When packing your kit for a lightweight trek you'll probably find that the water you need is the heaviest item in your backpack. It is worthwhile planning your route so that you can refill your water bottle and reduce the amount of water that you need to carry.
One key benefit of going ultra lightweight is that much of the equipment is so much less expensive than the more robust, heavier duty items. You will even find some bargain lightweight backpacks in various discount stores, often sold as day sacks costing only a few dollars. They may be simple designs with only one or two external pockets, but easily adequate for most lightweight backpacking expeditions. But they can be excellent for lightweight trekking.
If you are going lightweight it's also worth considering your clothing. Forget your all weather outdoor clothing and instead go for an ultra lightweight rain and wind proof fold-up cagoule and some light weight sports shoes rather than heavy walking boots.
When you've lightened your load with some lightweight clothing and less gear in a lightweight backpack you will find that a 20 mile trek will seem like nothing at all.
Is there a light duty pickup that could be compatible with a 2.8 Cummins diesel?
Im looking to have a small s10, dodge dakota, ford ranger... something along those lines, with a small diesel motor. Ive found a 2.8 liter cummins and wonder what i can do. or even if there is a small gm diesel
You are looking at a pretty big project. The engine mounts can be modified to accept different engines, but the transmission bolts will probably not line up and will require drilling. Not to mention major electrical issues.
I know that Land Rover produces a smaller diesel motor that may also fit in a pickup, but I don't know much else about that. Most likely the same set of problems. It is quite unfortunate that diesels are not as widely available here as they are in Europe. I would definitely buy a small diesel pickup.
Good luck!
Climate Flip-Flopper Mitt Romney: In 2004, He Supported Vehicle Carbon Limits (Think Progress)
On Saturday, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said he wanted to
strip the EPA of its authority to set standards for cars and trucks that
reduce tailpipe carbon emissions. Just a few short years ago, Massachusetts
Governor Mitt Romney had the exact opposite position when it came to
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions standards for our [...]
